Why is a Transmission Flush Important?

Between oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid, it may seem like a tireless game trying to keep up with all of the important fluids for your vehicle. One of the fluids we noted above was transmission fluid, and unfortunately, that is usually the one that is the most overlooked and forgotten about, but essential to your car functioning. We are going to review why this fluid and a transmission flush is important and should be at the top of your list when it comes to your vehicle’s well being and maintenance.

What is Transmission Fluid?

Your transmission relies on transmission fluid to lubricate the moving parts inside your transmission. This slippery liquid is optimized for the special requirements of your vehicle, such as valve operation, brake band friction, torque converter, and gear lubrication. How often you should change your transmission fluid, depends on the vehicle and how you drive and use your car, truck, or SUV.

Like all auto fluids, transmission fluid degrades and breaks down over time. Due to the heat generated in a transmission, the fluid loses its lubricating abilities, causing your transmission to work harder and hotter, and be more likely to fail. Old transmission fluid can also become contaminated with worn bits of transmission that can cause issues to your vehicle. Ultimately, having old transmission fluid, that is not properly maintained, can shorten the life of your transmission.

What is a Transmission Flush?

Okay, now that we have reviewed what transmission fluid is, let’s review what a transmission flush is and why is it important.

A transmission flush is a procedure to remove old transmission fluid, sludge, and grime from a vehicle’s transmission and replace it with fresh fluid. A transmission flush helps maximize the lifespan and performance of your transmission. Many manufacturers recommend a transmission flush every 30,000 miles or two years.

Is a transmission flush the same as changing the transmission fluid?

No. With a transmission fluid change, only about 50% (maybe less) of your transmission fluid is replaced. With a transmission flush, 100% of your transmission fluid is replaced.

When you change your transmission fluid the process simply drains the fluid using natural gravitational forces. Not all the fluid in the system is drained using this method and it does not flush out contaminants.

A flush uses a professional grade machine to completely clear all the transmission fluid from your vehicle and remove the grime and contaminants from the torque converter and cooler lines to prevent them from causing transmission problems. This process involves running a special solution through the lines until they come out completely clean and then fills up the system with new fluid.

Okay, got it. But why is a transmission flush important?

Transmission flushes are designed to prevent transmission issues and keep your vehicle operating as it should. This process involves cleaning out the old, worn fluid from your system, and replacing it with fresh transmission fluid to keep your vehicle healthy. As mentioned above, a transmission fluid change doesn’t result in full fluid replacement and even after a change, you can have contaminants in your fluid, flowing through your vehicle.

Transmission flushes are important because they reduce or eliminate debris or contaminants that appear in the transmission over time, ultimately leading to lower wear and tear on the engine and other vehicle components.

A transmission flush helps maximize the lifespan and performance of your transmission. Transmissions are complicated and expensive, so avoiding issues with them by taking preventative steps, is always a good thing.
